The concept of life-long learning is at the core of the economic development objectives for Gold Coast City. Rapid technological and social change, and forces such as globalisation have had major impacts on the basis for competitive success. Skills and knowledge must continually be upgraded in order to face the challenges of the future. Educational attainment, skills and participation rates in all forms of education and training are key determinants of the success of regions.

The education priorities for the city are:
Create a culture within the Gold Coast community and industry that highly values life-long learning with outcomes including high rates of participation and continual involvement in many and various forms of formal and informal learning.

- Strengthen and foster linkages between education and industry.
- To develop, provide and promote a diverse range of lifelong learning opportunities
- Focus on the transition from school to work and the skill development of young people
- Champion Life Long Learning in the city amongst the business community
- Provide support for the development of training that promotes youth employment
- Support the development of a CRC in Learning
- Recognise and celebrate exemplary teaching and learning practice
Education is constantly changing in response to the needs of society and the business community. Gold coast education providers are at the leading edge of the learning revolution, adopting new and innovative systems to provide flexibility and to focus on specialist areas.
Council has a commitment to a ‘whole of city” approach in terms of culture, attitude and cooperative action. This partnership has contributed to a 25 per cent increase in international students studying in the city from 2004 to 2006 in comparison to Australia’s 8.3% increase. International education adds a total estimated annual expenditure of $1.2 billion to the city's economy. The industry includes preschool education, primary and secondary education, vocational education, universities, technical and further education, business colleges, language schools, specialised training colleges, research centres and centres of excellence.
